In June 2015, the Gauntlet was laid down: was it possible to write and stage a play within a year?! And so the work of the writing group began. After its initial overwhelming response with 24 people attending, the group settled down to a constant attendance of between 4 and 8 people. Meeting once a month the first half of the task was thoroughly enjoyed. The second proved more demanding, yet was achieved to an extent by John Brigg who drafted a script and shared it at a Café Villon meeting.
Where does this leave the group? Well, on 26 June 2016, six writers met to reflect and decide “what next?” What emerged was the sheer joy each had had working through Noël Greig’s writing exercises in “Playwriting a practical guide”. Whilst all enjoyed the freedom this had brought, there was a recognition for the need of some sort of structure. This led to the idea that during monthly meetings the group would systematically work through all the exercises of Noel’s book and see what emerges. The group also wanted to ensure that any work was collaborative and decided that each session members will take turns to lead. Some of the group would also like to air some of their own work and the theme chosen was Aliens in Luxembourg : perspectives of living in Luxembourg. The group also enjoyed Janice Dunn’s writing workshop and plans to organise a day/weekend workshop soon.
Who runs it?
The group is run by Cecile Somers, Chris Wilson, Wendy Winn, Rod McCall and Julie Fraser.
When and where does the group meet?
The group meets once per month, usually on the first or second Thursday. As we rely on turn out and the availability of venues, the location of where we meet changes. Therefore please contact one of the organisers below for more information.
The next meeting will take place on 8th December 2016 @8pm at a members home.
