A little about Martin McDonagh, author of The Pillowman
|Posted by Julie Fraser (julie) on Sep 28 2016|
At the age of 27 Martin McDonagh, author of The Pillowman, was the first playwright since Shakespeare to have four plays performed simultaneously on the London stage
McDonagh is a British/Irish playwright, screenwriter and film director who was brought up in London. His first six plays are located in and around County Galway in Ireland where he spent childhood holidays with his Irish parents and include The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Cripple of Innishmaan. The plays were a runaway success. McDonagh also wrote and directed the film In Bruges and won an Academy Award for his short film Six Shooter. His work shows a range of disparate influences, not least the joyous rage of punk and the idyllic blue skies of Ireland. The result is an essentially diaspora voice of London-Irish, rich and conflicting.
The Pillowman received its première at the National Theatre in London in 2003 and opened on Broadway in 2005. It has received numerous awards including the2004 Oliver Award for Best New Play, the 2005 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play, and two Tony Awards. The play has been translate...d into over 40 languages and is still being produced all over the globe.
