NWTC's Youth Group amaze and engage!

New World Theatre's Youth Group participated in an audition workshop on 12 November.  They brought with them much energy, focus and playfulness!

Earlier in the youth programme,  members were introduced to various ways in which directors might audition them.  The aim of workshop audition was to give the youth theatre experience of different types of auditions with a view to casting The Hobbit. With NWTC members support, youth theatre members  were invited to :

  • Select and present two short texts from The Hobbit, whilst trying to incorporate elements worked on this year (Uta Hagen's questions, actioning, commedia dell arte and improvisation) (thanks to Julie Fraser, Natalia Sanchez and Mitch Mitchelson)
  • Prepare a short song to share (thanks to Lex Gillen and Chris Albrecht)
  • Participate in enunciation and projection exercises (thanks to Angela Milne and Chris Wilson)
  • create a soundscape (thanks to Christine Probst and Ann Overstal))
  • prepare one item/discuss an idea for bringing The Hobbit to life backstage (thanks to Hilary Brown, Laura Fraser, Daniela Badea and Pauline Lloyd)
  • learn and perform a short, choreographed dance (thanks to Victor Bonanno and Chantelle Bonicci)
  • bring a completed audition form and have a headshot done (thanks to Rose Flammant, Ailbhe Jennings and Phil Taylor)

All above areas were assessed during the four-hour workshop. Members were  divided into five teams of six actors,  each having a helper to keep them on track (thanks to Lesley Chesters, Tim Winters, Katie Bull, Martin Campion and Juliet Ostretova.) Having been briefed by Valerie Scott, the whole workshop was overseen by Zeta Field, not an easy task! Directors, Julie Fraser and Natalia Sanchez, were delighted to find that the Youth Group was very engaged allowing for a lot of fun  and learning  to take place! There were some wonderful surprises throughout the day.

Casting will be announced over the next two  weeks. The Hobbit will be performed in March 2017.
