Telling stories: auditions for Pillowman

Do you want to tell a story?!  Gav Guilfoyle invited auditionees for The Pillowman to participate in a wondrous workshop afternoon of telling stories.

Over twenty people (adults and youths, existing members and new faces) joined Gav at Altrimenti on 30 April to explore ways in which we can tell stories. After a vocal and physical warm-up participants  were asked to:

  • Share a memory of something they had done that morning
  • Imagine they were addressing a group in a darkened cave and, In three sentences, describe an object to the rest of the group without stating the name of the object
  • Imagine they were addressing a group in a large auditorium and, In three sentences, state what the object might say if it could speak
  • In pairs, read  a short (prepared) story to each other repeatedly whilst, step by step, adding in layers such as:

-Sound effects

-Slight embellishment of  the text

-Silly voice

-Movement/gestures

  • Present the story in pairs to the rest of the group
  • Individually, use the same layers of sound, embellishment, voice and movement to share a different piece of text with the group.

There was much laughter, work and some amazing delivery of stories throughout the afternoon!  Director Gav now has the unenviable task of casting The Pillowman and hopes to have accomplished this by the end of the first week in May. Thanks to Gav for a  thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and to John Brigg and committee members, Chris Albrecht and Julie Fraser, for supporting this event.
