Bertie’s War: NWTC Youth theatre 2017-2018
1st Call Out to existing youth members
We are happy to announce that NWTC will be able to offer a youth season once again, starting on Saturday, 7 October (13.00-15.00 pm) and run each Saturday (save for school holiday weeks) until mid-March 2018. As existing members, you are being asked to subscribe before anyone else.
Bertie’s War: Bertie is your average teenager, as happy being around his friends as he is dreaming of what his future holds. Starting in 1913, his world is suddenly turned upside down as World War I breaks out and he is rushed to the front-line. Inspired by Joan Littlewood’s brilliant “Oh what a lovely war”, we will take a different journey where we instead focus on how life was for Bertie, his family and friends both ‘back home’ and on the Western Front.
“We all move to satisfy a need”
Rudolph Laban
This year’s series of workshops will be led by director Julie Fraser and assistant director, Chris Albrecht, together with volunteer mentors and an external visiting tutor. We will look at ensemble work, individual character creation, movement, dance and song to find our way. You do not need to be able to dance or sing but you do definitely need to want to try and to play!
Please note that we do not intend to have a full-blown production this year. Instead, any production elements will be kept to a minimum whilst we focus on the weekly two-hour workshops. However, this does not mean that we expect any reduction in your commitment as we shall share the processes employed and outcome achieved at the end of the season (11 March 2018) in front of an audience. We also anticipate the work carried out over the coming year will be incorporated into the 2018-9 NWTC season. We are therefore very excited by this project and look forward to working together on it with laughter along the way!

The aim of NWTC running a youth group is for NWTC members to inspire youths as they share their knowledge, experience and enjoyment of theatre. We have priced the programme to cover our costs. The subscription has again been kept to a minimum and is only possible due to the continued and unstinting support of NWTC.

Rules
The youth theatre is a lot of fun for everyone involved. It works as many people collaborate: parents organise busy family schedules to enable participants to join in, participants commit to the programme and agree to attend promptly and engage during the sessions, volunteers work behind the scenes to plan and coordinate the programme during the year and last, but not least, the director plans the sessions each week, allocating work assuming everyone is present. It is therefore essential that:
1. Participants turn up early, ready to commence the workshop at 13.00 and engage fully in the sessions, respecting themselves and each other
2. Although the presumption is that participants attend each session, if you are unable to attend please be sure to write to the director Julie Fraser (Julie(at)nwtc(dot)lu) with assistant director, Christopher Albrecht (chris(at)nwtc(dot)lu) and membership secretary Rose Flammant (Rose(at)nwtc(dot)lu) in copy. If multiple sessions are missed, roles have to be reallocated.
3. Respect towards your fellow actors/director/helpers is essential. If it proves necessary to speak with any participant three times for poor behaviour they will be asked to leave the group.
